Heartworm, Ticks & Fleas
Now that the warmer months are here, it's time to think about, tick, internal parasites and flea control. Please feel free to call and schedule appointment to discuss a preventive plan tailored to your pets lifestyle.
Hyperthermia (Overheated)
Please do not leave your pet in a hot car. The temperature inside a vehicle is hotter than the temperature outside. It doesn't take very long for your pet to overheat. Too many accidents have happened. Make sure there is shade and water for them to get to at all times.
Also, certain forms of algae can be toxic. Algae can be found in ponds or other bodies of water.
Be careful with lawn pesticides. All contain chemicals that may cause serious illnesses for your pet. Be careful when walking your pet on lawns that were recently treated.
Cheatgrass and Foxtail season is here!!
Cheatgrass is a generic name for several types of brome grasses that all share similar stiff, spiny seed heads called awns. These awns all have developed backward barbs that allow them to become easily attached to just about anything while simultaneously preventing them from coming out easily. They are frustratingly good at attaching themselves to our pets but not very good at letting go.
Helpful Tips
After being outside in an area that has cheatgrass please check between their toes and around their ears. Pods can even be known to work their way into the skin through the lungs and abdomen, which can cause serious infections and problems. Pods can also get stuck in pets' mouths and back in the tonsils.
Signs pets may have a cheatgrass:
Head shaking or cry when touch in by the ear
Small red spot between the toes

Dental Disease
Did you know that 80 percent of pets by the age of 2 years will have some form of dental disease!!!
Some signs of dental disease are:
Bad breath, Refusal to eat, Bleeding gums
Make sure to schedule your annual wellness exam so we can go over dental health for your pet.

Looks like summer is here!!
Now that the warmer months are here, it's time to think about heartworm preventative and flea control. Summer brings along many diseases that can be fatal to your pet. Heartworm is transmitted by mosquitoes. All dogs should be on a monthly preventative. If you haven't had your dog tested yet, please do so. Another problem that occurs during the warmer months are fleas and ticks. They not only annoy your pets, they carry worms. Please have your pets on a once a month flea and tick treatment. If you are planning to camp or hike with your pet , it's important to apply a flea and tick product to your dog. Again, our hospitals have many products to choose from.
Lets not forget get are feline friends also, they are are risk for fleas and ticks also
KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE THIS SPRING & SUMMER !
Remember to please be careful with open windows this summer. Make sure all windows and doors have screens on them to keep our pets safe. Also, please do not leave your pet in a hot car. The temperature inside a vehicle is hotter than the temperature outside. It doesn't take very long for your pet to overheat. Too many accidents have happened. If you can, please leave your pet at home where it is cooler.
It is also important to never leave your pet unattended near uncovered pools, even if they can swim. Chemicals that are found in swimming pools can be harmful if ingested, or can irritate their skin. Also, certain forms of algae can be toxic. Algae can be found in ponds or other bodies of water.
Be careful with lawn pesticides. All contain chemicals that may cause serious illnesses for your pet. Be careful when walking your pet on lawns that were recently treated.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us. We are happy to be there for you. Have a safe and healthy summer !!!!!!!
